What is Myofascial Release (MFR)?

Myofascial Release (MFR) is a gentle, hands-on therapy that targets the fascial system—the connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles, bones, and organs. By applying sustained pressure to specific areas, MFR helps release fascial restrictions, alleviate chronic pain, and improve overall movement. Unlike traditional massage techniques, MFR addresses the root causes of discomfort rather than just symptoms. Myofascial Release provides effective pain management and chronic pain relief without invasive surgery, painkillers, or injections.

How does MFR differ from traditional massage techniques?

While traditional massage techniques like deep tissue and cupping focus on manipulating muscles and superficial tissues, MFR works on the deeper fascial layers. MFR uses gentle, sustained pressure to address fascial restrictions, which can often be the source of chronic pain and movement limitations. Traditional methods may provide temporary relief, but MFR aims to create lasting change by resolving the underlying issues.

What can I expect during an MFR session?

During an MFR session, I'll first do a standing assessment of your body. Being clothed in shorts/underwear/sports bra allows me to see where various restrictions are as you stand in gravity. It's important to avoid using lotion or oil before your appointment as MFR techniques are applied to dry skin. Lotions or oils cause my hands to glide or slip on superficial fascial layers, making it more difficult to reach the deeper fascial layers. I will use gentle, sustained pressure to target specific areas of tension or restriction in your fascia. The session involves slow and deliberate movements, and you may be guided to focus on your breath and body sensations. MFR is a collaborative process, and your feedback is an important part of the treatment.

How many MFR sessions will I need?

The number of sessions required varies depending on individual needs and the nature of your condition. Some clients experience significant relief after just a few sessions, while others may need ongoing treatments to fully address their issues. Regular appointments are recommended to monitor progress and make adjustments as needed. Booking several sessions in advance can help maintain continuity in your treatment plan. Clients who schedule sessions closer together often experience more significant improvements. To start, plan on attending 1-2 sessions per week for the best results.

Is MFR painful?

MFR is designed to be a gentle and non-invasive technique. While the pressure applied during the session may be firm, it should not be painful. It’s normal to feel some discomfort as fascial restrictions are released, but this discomfort is typically mild and temporary. Communication with me during the session is important to ensure that the pressure is comfortable for you.

What should I do before and after my MFR session?

Before your session, it’s helpful to stay hydrated and avoid heavy meals. Wear comfortable shorts or sports bra and shorts. After your session, it’s important to drink plenty of water to help flush out any toxins that may have been released. You may also experience some soreness or new sensations as your body adjusts, which is a normal part of the healing process.

Can MFR help with specific conditions or injuries?

MFR is effective for a wide range of conditions, including chronic pain, post-surgical recovery, stress, poor posture, and repetitive strain injuries. It can also address issues that don’t have a clear medical diagnosis. MFR works by targeting the fascial system, which influences various aspects of physical and emotional health. If you have a specific condition or injury, I will tailor the treatment to your needs.
