What is Myofascial Release
and other FAQs

If you’re new to Myofascial Release, you probably have questions. Below are the most common ones I hear from clients in Oswego and the surrounding areas.
What is Myofascial Release (MFR)?
John F. Barnes' Myofascial Release® is a gentle form of hands-on bodywork. It uses sustained pressure to areas of discomfort. Instead of forcing change, we allow your body the time and space it needs to soften and melt these areas. Over time, clients notice less pain and tension in their body, improved movement and flexibility, fewer flare-ups of a chronic condition, and a greater sense of ease.
“the effects after just one session were so much better than standard massage”
My first appointment with Kelly was great. I had no experience with myofascial release therapy and while it was not exactly what I expected in a massage, the effects after just one session was so much better than from a standard spa massage. I have been telling my family and friends about it since I left. Definitely will be back to see Kelly!

Is Myofascial Release right for me?
If you’re wondering whether myofascial release is right for you, you’re not alone.
This work is especially helpful for people dealing with chronic pain, tension, or symptoms that haven’t fully resolved with other treatments like massage, physical therapy, or chiropractic care.
It may be a good fit if:
-
You’ve tried other approaches but still have lingering pain
-
Your symptoms seem to move or don’t follow a clear pattern
-
You’re looking for a more whole-body, personalized approach
-
You’re ready to be an active participant in your healing
Because every body is different, the best way to know is to come in and experience it for yourself. We’ll work together to see how your body responds and what approach feels right for you.
“I have had neck and shoulder pain for years”
I’ve been receiving MFR for some time now. I have had neck and shoulder pain for years. It has been a gradual process. But after my time with Kelly my neck pain is more or less gone and my shoulder pain has decreased. I have tried so many other things that were not as impactful. This works but it is a process.

How is Myofascial Release different from massage therapy or physical therapy?
Maybe you’ve been searching for myofascial release vs massage or myofascial release vs physical therapy, and you're likely wondering how this differs. Many people in the Oswego, IL area come in wondering the same thing.
Massage therapy often focuses on muscles and relaxation, while physical therapy typically follows structured protocols to treat specific injuries or conditions. Physical Therapy may be limited to working only on the specific injury or condition.
Barnes’ Myofascial Release Approach® is different.
It treats your body as a whole, interconnected system rather than isolating one area of pain. Instead of following a standard plan, each session is guided by your unique history, symptoms, and fascial restrictions.
Using sustained pressure and time, I help restrictions gently release and “melt,” allowing your body to return to a more natural, fluid state.
“I leave feeling much lighter and am seeing a decrease in my overall pain and anxiety”
I started seeing Kelly due to chronic upper left trap pain and anxiety. I absolutely love my sessions. I leave feeling super relaxed and much lighter than when I came in and I am seeing a decrease in my overall pain and anxiety. I definitely recommend!

What happens during a Myofascial Release treatment?
Like most people, you're likely wondering what to expect during a myofascial release session, especially your first visit. So, here’s how it works.
During your first appointment, I’ll take time to truly listen to your story. You’ll share, in your own words, what you’re experiencing, what you’ve tried, and what your goals are for treatment.
I’ll then do a postural evaluation, both standing and lying down, to identify your unique patterns of fascial restriction.
From there, your session is completely individualized. Using sustained, gentle pressure, I work with your body to help restrictions release and soften over time.
At follow-up visits, I check in to see how you responded to the previous session, do a brief postural reassessment, and focus on areas that need attention that day.
You may also receive simple self-care exercises or stretches to support your progress between sessions.
Many clients find this work deeply relaxing, while others notice subtle or gradual changes as their body begins to let go of deeply held tension. Every experience is different, because every body is different.
If you’re dealing with chronic pain, tension, or injuries that haven’t fully resolved, this approach allows us to work with your body at its own pace, rather than forcing change.
“She has really helped address my aches”
Kelly is fantastic at addressing sources of tightness and pain. As someone who spends lots of hours behind a computer, I am so grateful for Kelly’s expertise. She has really helped address my aches and has given me excellent suggestions for alleviating tension and loosening tight muscles at home.

Is Myofascial Release painful?
I hear you worrying and wondering “does myofascial release hurt?”, and the short answer is no, it shouldn’t be painful.
Unlike deep tissue massage, which can use forceful pressure, Myofascial Release uses gentle, sustained pressure and time to allow your body to release restrictions naturally.
Most clients experience the work as slow, calming, and often deeply relaxing.
That said, you may feel some sensation in areas where your body is holding tension or restriction. Some people describe this as a stretching or pulling feeling (like taffy being pulled), mild discomfort that feels "productive" or "right" or "good", or possibly a sense of release or softening.
Your comfort is always the priority. I work with your body, not against it, and we stay within your tolerance at all times.
This approach allows your nervous system to relax, which is an important part of creating lasting change, especially for chronic pain.
Many clients are surprised by how gentle the work is, and how effective it can be without force.
If you’ve had painful experiences with massage in the past, this approach is very different.
What should I wear to a Myofascial Release session? Do I need to get undressed?
Because Myofascial Release is unique, many clients initially wonder what to wear to myofascial release or whether they need to undress completely, like for a traditional massage. In short, no, there's no need to fully undress.
Myofascial Release is performed on clean, dry skin without oils or lotions (please avoid putting any lotion or oil on yourself before your appointments), so loose-fitting clothing that allows access to the areas being treated works best. In addition, avoid using scents/cologne before treatment so the space can remain neutral for those folks who are sensitive to smells.
Typically, women choose to wear a sports bra and shorts, a two-piece bathing suit, or bra and underwear. Men usually choose athletic shorts with underwear underneath.
You’re always appropriately covered, and we work within your comfort level at all times.
If you’re ever unsure what to wear, feel free to ask before your session. I’m happy to guide you.
“I feel amazing! Not only did MFR transform my life physically, but also in every other way.”
Amazing! Started out 13ish sessions ago like a 90 yr old woman barely able to walk, I’m 42. Within 3 sessions I was able to walk up & down stairs. By 5 sessions I was running stairs & now I feel like I’m in my 20’s again! I feel amazing! Not only did MFR transform my life physically, but also in every other way. I am able to be aware of my feelings & space, I am now fully present in my body, I have self love for the 1st time & I am a better human, wife & mother. Thank you Kelly🙏 I know I will continue with this work!

How soon will I notice relief from Myofascial Release?
Maybe you've landed here from searching how long does myofascial release take to work. The honest answer is: it depends on your body, your history, and how long you’ve been dealing with pain.
Some people notice relief after their very first session, while others experience more gradual changes over time.
Many clients begin to notice meaningful improvements within 4–6 sessions as layers of restriction start to release, like peeling back the layers of an onion.
For longer-lasting or chronic issues, consistent treatment is key.
To get the best results:
-
Weekly sessions are recommended, especially in the beginning
-
More frequent sessions (2–3 times per week) can help your body change more quickly
-
Over time, sessions are spaced out as your body holds those changes
This work is not about quick fixes, it’s about creating lasting change in how your body moves and feels.
If you’ve been dealing with chronic pain, tension, or recurring issues, it’s common for healing to take time, but it is possible.
Many clients choose to continue care over several months to a year as their body continues to reorganize and improve.
How often should I receive Myofascial Release?
A question I frequently hear is "how often should I receive myofascial release?" Like the previous question, the answer will be unique to you and your goals. We'll come up with a treatment plan for you during your Initial Consultation.
From what I've seen with my clients, consistency is key to getting the best results.
In the beginning, weekly sessions are recommended. This allows us to build momentum in your body, address holding/tension patterns before they return, and track your progress, adjusting treatment as needed.
Some clients choose to come more frequently (2–3 times per week) for faster progress, especially when dealing with more intense or long-standing pain.
As your body begins to change and hold those improvements, sessions are gradually spaced out.
Because my schedule often books 3–6 weeks in advance, I recommend scheduling several appointments ahead of time. This helps you stay consistent and avoid gaps in care that can slow your progress.
We’ll work together to find a schedule that fits both your goals and your life.
“After just a few treatments I notice a difference.”
After holding on to tension my whole life in my shoulders and neck, I had my therapist suggest this treatment. I've been REALLY happy with it. After just a few treatments I notice a difference. I'm sleeping a little better. I notice my shoulders aren't as tight. She's very professional and thorough. I'm very happy with her.

How many Myofascial Release sessions will I need?
I see you. You've been googling how many myofascial sessions will I need, and looking at your budget. You're wondering "will I need to be in treatment forever?" My honest answer is that it depends on your body, your history, and your goals.
Some people notice changes quickly, while others with more long-standing or complex issues need more time and consistency.
Many clients begin to see meaningful progress within the first 4–6 sessions. From there, treatment continues based on your goals and how your body responds.
This work is a process of uncovering layers of restriction, not a quick fix. The more consistent you are, the more your body is able to change and hold those changes.
We’ll check in regularly and adjust your plan as you go, so it always feels aligned with your progress.
What should I expect after a Myofascial Release session?
If you’re curious what to expect after receiving myofascial release, know that your experience may vary from session to session.
Many clients feel more relaxed and at ease in their body. You may notice increased mobility or less tension. Sometimes, the changes feel like a sense of lightness or improved alignment.
Some people may experience mild soreness (similar to after a good workout), fatigue or the need for extra rest. There can also be emotional releases as the body lets go of stored tension.
All of these responses are normal and part of your body processing and integrating the work.
Drinking water, moving gently, and giving yourself space to rest can help support your results between sessions.
“After completing 8 sessions with Kelly, my neck feels looser.”
I’ve been a long-time client of Kelly. In September, I had a hematoma on my left hip that was painful. Doctors told me it would take 4-6 months to fully resolve. My neck also gets stiff and hard to turn at times, which makes driving difficult. After completing 8 sessions with Kelly, my neck feels looser. I was able to rake leaves this fall easier and feel less tired after it! The hematoma on my leg no longer bothers me and has significantly decreased.

What makes your approach to Myofascial Release different?
Have you landed here from googling myofascial release near you and wondering what makes this work different? The key difference in my Myofascial Release at my Oswego, IL location is how individualized and personalized it is. I'm here to support your healing journey.
I use the Barnes’ Myofascial Release Approach®, which focuses on sustained pressure and time to allow the body to release restrictions naturally.
Rather than following a set routine or protocol, each session is guided by what your body presents that day.
I also take the time to listen to your full story. Your symptoms are not just physical, they’re part of a larger picture that includes your experiences, patterns, and how your body has adapted over time.
This creates a more personalized, whole-body approach that supports lasting change, not just temporary relief.
How much does treatment cost?
Initial Consultations are $200. Follow-up Myofascial Release treatments are also $200.
Packages of 6 treatment sessions are available to help you meet your treatment goals. Packages cost $1100, are non-refundable and non-transferrable.
How long do I have to use the sessions available in my package?
All sessions must be used within 10 weeks of your purchase date.
“If you’re considering it, buy the package. It’s worth it. ”
I’ve now had more than five sessions with Kelly and try to go weekly, as she recommends. If you’re considering it, buy the package. It’s worth it. I’ve already noticed a meaningful difference in my back. It is not magically cured, but I am no longer tweaking it to the point where I can’t get out of bed. Now, I mostly experience manageable stiffness instead of debilitating pain. I’ve also discovered extremely tender spots throughout my body that I did not even know existed. It still amazes me that she can find these areas just by feel, sometimes before I even mention them.
