Myofascial Release and the Thaw Response

Fight, Flight, Freeze

Have you ever wondered why humans end up with PTSD but wild animals don't?

During seminars, John Barnes often shares this video of a polar bear being tracked by scientists in a helicopter. It's shot with a tranquilizer while it's running. The scientists do their thing. After about an hour, the tranquilizer wears off and we see the polar bear go through a process - he thaws. He discharges all that trapped energy that became stored when he was tranquilized.

Humans have the same survival mechanisms available to them - fight, flight, or freeze. Sometimes we let our thinking brain override that thaw response - we don't want to be seen as 'weird' or 'weak' or whatever other reason we come up with.

When you receive Myofascial Release, sometimes the thwarted thaw response will show up. You'll begin to shake, maybe a little at first, maybe a lot!

It's OK! In fact, it's EXACTLY what needs to happen!

Your body is finding positions of past trauma (it doesn't matter if you remember the incident or not), completing the survival mechanism, and letting go of that stored energy.
